Finding Accessible Venues

There are a number of apps and websites out there dedicated to helping people find restaurants, bars, cafes and other venues that are accessible. These apps rely on crowd sourcing to deliver the most accurate and up to date information on accessible venues across the world, including photos and user experiences.

AccessNow uses pins to map the accessibility of locations around the world. Green pins indicate very accessible places, yellow pins indicate partially accessible places and red pins indicate inaccessible places.

Able Amsterdam has lots of information (in English) for wheelchair users about fun things to do in Amsterdam and places to go. It even has a comprehensive city map!

AllGo is a review app where plus-size people rate the comfort and accessibility of public spaces so others can know what to expect. They also have a great blog where they discuss plus sized friendly chairs and their efforts to catalogue customer policies at entertainment venues.

Intersectional note: while opinions differ on whether body size is an aspect of disability, there are many people with disabilities who are also plus sized.

Brett Approved provides ratings on physical access and comprehensive photos of venues across the United States of America, including restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions.

Easy Access Chicago provides a list of restaurants in downtown Chicago that have been surveyed by access specialists to determine if they are wheelchair friendly.

Euan’s Guide provides access reviews by disabled people for disabled people. The website includes video reviews in British Sign Language and navigation for eye gaze technology users.

iAccessLife provides five star ratings for physically accessible venues, and also suggests recommendations based on the user’s profile.

JJ’s list provides a directory of businesses and locations and allows users to leave reviews about the level of disability inclusion at each location.

Sociability provides standardized, objective accessibility profiles for restaurants, bars and cafes.

SoundPrint provides ratings and reviews on venues based on their sound levels. It includes a decibel meter to help users conduct an objective sound check.

Wheelog! collates information about wheelchair accessible venues. It differentiates itself through its user created travel maps of wheelchair traversable pathways. This app is available in ten different languages, including English, Chinese and Spanish.
